When I was reading through one of the Sunday Times supplements, there were two particular articles I noticed. A double page on Spiderman, followed by a double page on Star Wars.
The Spiderman one, was pretty basic. It was talking about all the money it raked in when it opened in the US and about all it's virtues. Somewhere before I hit the end, the article lost it's steam. I think an article of only praise has it's limits. Plus, although I know I want to see it, there's got to be someone with a contrasting opinion. I found this opnion, however, on the following page, although dealing with a different movie.
The Star Wars article was something I was surprised to find in a newspaper. It was a flame, by someone who seemed to have lost the point of movies in general, and also seemed to think himself witty in the various ways in which he could put it down. For crying out loud it hasn't even been released yet.
I was really disappointed with both, just because I didn't have any clear idea of what the issue of the article was, or anything about what the movie was about. The thing about movies, as with most things in life, you have to take them as they come. I refuse to believe anything is without a 'good' point.
Yah. It seems to be a common practice to present cynically overcritical reviews and complaints as valid opinion - as if there was anything to back them up. Especially in that case, where there wasn't even any justification.
One thing about it - there actually was a pirate copy (DivX, I'd assume) of Star Wars II that got out on the internet... probably available on Kazaa and the like. But I doubt he'd have seen that.
So I was wondering - how long is the delay usually between US release and UK/European release for movies? Or is there any? I know my German friends say they're about a year behind in TV shows, but beside that I don't know much about how our culture (or lack thereof) filters over.
posted by: matt on May 13, 2002 10:16 PMIt depends. Some movies like Lord of the Rings had a simulatneous release date. Some are 4 months or slightly more. It's getting to be less.
Four years ago it used to be a six month delay on movies.
I'm not sure about television shows, but that figure sounds about right.
*sigh*

If you haven't seen it, I'd recommend Spiderman - I haven't seen it, but I have yet to hear a review of it that is anything but glowing.
posted by: matt on May 13, 2002 11:33 PMI know. Seeing movies here is really expensive (£8.20 = $12?) so video is usually the best option.
I plan on going to see it with some friends. =)
posted by: Laura on May 14, 2002 09:27 AMI'm surprised that Spiderman didn't come out first in the UK. The Philippines is usually one of the last to get Hollywood movies.
With Spiderman, you'll either love it or hate it. Compared to most of the action flicks this movie actually has believable characters.
I heard mixed reviews about Star Wars II but I'm still going to see it (mainly because of Ewan Mcgregor) hehehe
