in my head

I have a song in my head, and it's haunting me... I related it to a book I was reading when I first heard the song, and now the title has been eluding me. Will. Not. Go. Crazy.

Pop-up ads are driving me

Pop-up ads are driving me nuts.

So is the fact that even though there are hundreds of movies at the store, I still manage to label them into "Seen it", "looks stupid" or "Heard it sucks."

No, it's not a bad mood... just reflections on the past hour.

OUch

I'm having a hard time coping with nothing to do. I just don't know what to do with myself.

Well, I did find something. I've been lying on my bed listening to some cd and trying to nap, because allergies have made my eyes a bit crazy.

The Friday Five

The Friday Five

When was the last time you...

1. ...sent a handwritten letter? A proper letter? Two weeks ago to a relative. I tend to use e-mails more for convience, but I a million times prefer handwritten letters.

2. ...baked something from scratch or made something by hand? The last time I baked from scratch is at least a month ago, but I did make those Fimo creatures by hand in Paris.

3. ...camped in a tent? Well, probably back when I was in Pathfinders. So that would be at least 5 years ago. I used to love it, but my family isn't so big on it.

4. ...volunteered your time to church, school, or community? For school/PTA, I volenteered to help decorate the boat and generally set up for the M3 (grade 8) graduation party last friday. It was fun, but the Thames isn't the most glamourous river to be cruising on. Heh.

5. ...helped a stranger? If giving directions counts, yesterday.

Here.

Where?

I've been missing these past few days because I was out. Some of my best friends left yesterday on a trip to the US, and it could have been the last time I see most of them depending on universities. We all spent the last couple of days doing stuff together, making the most of our time. Apart from not having time to finish my changes, being on my computer was something I didn't want to do while they were still around. Now they've left and I'm back.

(Also very tired. I was up early to tape my Dad's interview on CNBC.)

Broken

My Nintendo 64 is dead. I was playing when it froze. After it was restarted a message about it being corrupted came up, but froze again. The next time it was just a black screen. Tried with other games all I get is the black screen. I don't play it too much anymore, but I'm sad about it all the same.

My colour

I couldn't help it. [Link snitched from Libby]

My aura colour is saphire:

"We don't need a psychic to tell us that you're giving off a Sapphire vibe. People with blue auras feel everything strongly — you tend to get a little emotional at the drop of a hat. You're also deeply spiritual and introspective. Matters of the heart, mind, and soul are important to you, and your waters run as deep as the ocean. Nurturing by nature, you're likely a loving, supportive caretaker. That's why friends, family, and co-workers adore you. They know you're a good listener and always have great advice and a shoulder for them to cry on. In fact, if we had to find a fault, it's that you can be a tad too self-sacrificing. Remember that it's okay to say no sometimes. You forgive everyone else their weaknesses, so go ahead and forgive yourself for a little well-deserved selfishness. Indulge your creative side and do something artsy, or just take a break from being the world's counselor. You'll come back refreshed and ready for more."

Football

So I've been watching the football just now, and Italy are out. It's an interesting mix in the world cup this time round.

In review...

The main phone line hasn't been working since I got back (everyone in my family was away this past weekend) so I'm hanging around waiting for the BT man to show up. That gives me some time to say about my week. Sooo....

Well, we left on Monday from Waterloo station, which has the stupidest bureau de change attendant. To change money at the station now, you apparently need official photo id. After hassling us, my mother finally figured out she had her drivers licence on her, and gave her that. Then comes...

(Lady): "I can't change you money. This card says Mrs. G... and This says Ms. G."

(Mother): "I kept my maiden name when I maried."

(L): "It's still not the same thing."

(M): "Mrs. means I'm married, and Ms. just says I'm female!"

(L): "Mrs. and Miss aren't the same."

(M): "It doesn't say Miss, it says, Ms. which can be Mrs as well."

(L): "Not the..."

(M): "Argh... Would you rather I showed a Mr card then..." 'rolling eyes'

She ended up having to produce her health card and her marriage licence just to get a little bit of money changed!

The rest of the day was filled with stupid things, mostly me saying reallly dumb thing. Like only seconds after I'd turned my watch ahead announcing, "Wow, we've been on the train for ages!"

When we got to Paris, we bought a weekly travel card, and took the metro to the station nearest out appartment with a grocery store that would be open. We regretted that as wek dragged everything back.

The second day we called about our TV which was broken, which wouldn't have bothered us too much except we really wanted to watch the world cup. It was around then that we realised our neighbour, across the courtyard and one floor down was watching the television. By the end of the day, when we got back in we realised that was about all he ever did, and christened him 'Monsieur Television."

After the second day, where we mostly stayed in the area and slept from late in the afternoon because we were dead tired, we were watching (one of) the world cup football matches in the morning and being tourists the rest of the day. With the expection of the Louvre, which we saw from the outside and two of us had already vistsed, we visited most of the big sites that we could think of.

Yesterday was mostly last minute clearing out, because we mostly packed up sunday night. The only thing we needed to buy still was a little box for our Fimo creatures (We bought some Fimo at an art store on Wednesday.)

Then it was back on the train here, for what feels like one of the shortest weeks ever.

Oh, BT man is, here now...

I'm back

Finally, I'm home. It was an amazing week, but I'll up date in a bit. I just got in and want to take a shower, unpack and run some laundry and make dinner, because I absolutely starved. (There wasn't any food on the train).

And for those who e-mailed, they're all on there way. =)

And I'm off...

Well I'm all packed, and waiting for the taxi. The (Eurostar) train doesn't leave till 11:45, but I'm going to be there very early to make sure I can buy some Euros. Then I meet up with two of my friends and we're off. We're staying in an appartment we've rented for the week, in Marais. I'm just so excited.

See you all in a week!

Name dropping

While I was out with my mom and aunt, we ended up in Knightsbridge; where Harrods is. Now, I hardly ever go there myself because, it's not my kind of place (Sloane street and expensive/designer gear isn't for me). Well, we got to looking for a picnic hamper (All I could think was 'how British') and were following mis directions around Harvey Nicks when we hit the stationary section; more specifically the Smythson section. Now they produce maybe novel, but overpriced little notebooks, with specially printed papers inside. For example, there one for wines, photographs, wedding pressents, seduction, football matches, theatre trips, gardening etc. I started pointing them out to my mom; my aunt had wandered off, and started making jokes about them.

All of a sudden this lady, who must have overheard us, turns around and starts laughing, and points out another and makes a similar style joke on another one. Almost immediately I realise it's Rosie O'donnell. So we start carrying on with these stupid jokes about the notebooks, laughing, and then a bit about the football (soccer she insisted) match today with England and David Beckham. Suddenly my aunt shows up and simultaniously her and my mom realise who it is, and are beaming like a pair of idiots. I just kept thinking, oh they're really going to embarrass me, oh no... But 5 more minutes of jokes and we both leave.

Now, outside my window in the park, there's an impressive firework display for the Queen's Jubilee. I had wanted to go over, but it rained all afternoon and I don't feel like sloshing around in the mud, so I'm just watching from my window. Cool.

Auntie

My Aunt (twice and godmother), from Toronto just arrived. My mom and I are going to take her out for lunch and maybe to the Tate modern. We were thinking of doing the touristy thing for a while, but we couldn't think of anything in particular to see.

I leave for Paris on Monday with some friends. I'm really looking forward to it, for hundreds of reasons. Those aside for the moment, if anyone would like a postcard from moi, send me an e-mail (with info) and I'll see what I can do.

Question 10

What's on your soundtrack?

Posted by Laura at 05:38 PM | Comments (1)

Nick Hornby

Yes, the book a day stint continues. *sigh* I just finished reading 'High Fidelity' (Nick Hornby). No I haven't seen the movie. After reading the book the likelyhood, despite all the people who've told me it was good, that I will go and rent it are pretty small. Maybe I'm being ultra thick and missing the book completely, but there wasn't really much there that I enjoyed. In any case, following in the pattern of 'About a Boy' (and no, I haven't seen that movie yet either) the ending was more like the book running out with a wimper. Ah well.

Leaving

For reasons I don't think I want to understand, several more of my favouite online reads have decided to stop blogging. Maybe it's that season changing has ths affect of making you want to go an do something different. Or just summer calling you outside away from the computer, making it harder and harder to come back and just think of something to say when faced with an empty posting window. I admit to having felt this, although I have no intention of leaving my blog, however much it struggles in the warm weather.

Of course I know will miss them, but despite all the warning it's still 'not fair'.

Likeness

Today I had the pleasure of being home alone for the day, all because of Andy's hockey tournament. Being a lovely day, I sat in the back garden and in a habit I've developed for such conditions, read like a mad woman. I finished reading (although in truth it was more like tackling the last 3/4 of) Planet of the Apes. After that, not being sunburnt but sufficiently allergic to the sun to have to sit in the shade, I read of the whole of K-PAX. I'm aware that there was recently a movie of this in the cinema, and am now curious as to how that could possibly have been made into a movie. Not the plot, which was clever enough, but the actually way in which it was written. Following that, and finding the sun was still up, I hit the Salmon of Doubt, which after reading the introduction and the majority of the 'Life' section I decided was well written and of course entertaining. However, I had put the last book down for a while, because Douglas Adams' writing has the general effect of making me want to write something... Which is something I shouldn't do under such a direct inpiration from any literary source.

So now having finished my new books, I think tomorrow will be another trip to the book store. Yeah!
